"Uncle Tom, how do you eat rice with chopsticks?" This question came from my young niece Emily when we were talking via webcam over the internet on Christmas Eve. I mention Emily because she is my youngest daily reader and that fact censors what appears on this website. |

My co-workers Cherry and Gracie helped me at lunch yesterday when I explained the question about rice. The simple answer is that we eat sticky rice in China--it clumps up easily--as opposed to the rice we tend to eat in the States where each grain retains its individuality. Also please note how we pick up the rice bowl and hold it closer to our mouth. |

I mentioned in passing that we eat from common dishes, and the question was asked how hygienic that was. I'm not sure, but I think the issue is more mental and cultural than one of hygiene. |

We also simply lean over and spit bones onto the table. That's just how we do it. |

But what got Emily groaning was when I mentioned that we had had red-headed fish for lunch and that I knew why the fish had that name because they still had their red heads attached. |

So, Emily, look what I ate the other day >>>> |
