Harvest Time
We've learned a lot together about China.  I came here last October totally ignorant of what I would find.  We've met interesting people and we've been to interesting places.  And almost everything has been a pleasant surprise except the most famous and well-known of sights.

There are also some things that I expected to see that I haven't seen.  A perfect example is a rice paddy.  After all, isn't that what you think of when you think of China?

As it turns out, I'm told there certainly are lots of rice paddies here, but they're just farther south than I've traveled.  Up here in the northeast, it's wheat country, and that's been reflected in the cuisine as well.  I haven't routinely eaten such tasty bread since I was living in Germany some forty years ago.

I can't show you a rice paddy, so you'll have to settle for wheat fields.  Most of these pictures were taken out the window of the hard sleeper car as Karen and I took the train toward Xi'an.
We were correct in our expectation to see terraced agriculture.  China has so many people to feed that they can't afford to waste any arable land.
