Olympic Torch BACK TO DATE PAGE
As you know, my favorite store is Carrefour and I stop by there almost every day on the way home from work.  Carrefour is French-owned and, as such, is France's face here in China.  So, when I was home in the States the other week, I wasn't surprised when my daughter Laura told me she had heard on National Public Radio about demonstrations against France that were being held outside Carrefour stores across China in response to the Paris Olympic Torch demonstrations.  The strong reaction here seems to have died down, though, because there have been plenty of Chinese shoppers in Carrefour the past few days that I've been back.  But not as many as usual, and there is a police presence around the outside that was not there when I left.
This new sign is at the entrance to Carrefour stating their commitment to China.  It has to be a public relations nightmare for them, and it made me think of how the United States reacted a few years ago when we felt challenged by France.  Do you remember the suggestion to stop calling french fries 'french fries' and instead call them 'american fries'?  There was also the proposed boycott of French products in the U.S.  Common sense ultimately prevailed, though, and it will here also.
