| Chang'an--present-day Xi'an--was the eastern end of the fabled Silk Road, the great transcontinental trading route, which linked the Roman Empire in the West with the imperial court of China in the East. Xi'an's most famous landmark is the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. This pagoda was completed in 652 AD to house the Buddhist sutras brought back from India by a Chinese monk, who, along with a team of linguistic monks, translated these scriptures. |
