My apartment has use of a free clothes washing machine on my floor but no dryer.  You see, here in China, a clothes dryer is considered a waste of precious energy.  You're simply expected to hang up your clothes to dry.  In many cases, as you'll see shortly, that means hanging them up outside.  In my case, however, it means hanging up my wet clothes  in my shower because I have no access to the outside.

You've already seen pictures of folks washing clothes in the river.  Here they're washing them out front of where they live in somewhat rural China.

This reminds me of my family's own backyard in Wisconsin, except Mom would've had at least two support uprights over this length.
